Seeing the Scriptures (Ephesians) ( BLE-3-0058 )

This course introduces students to the practice of visually organizing Scripture at the sentence level through phrase diagramming. Students learn how to observe grammatical relationships, identify main ideas, and recognize how supporting phrases function within a sentence. The course emphasizes slowing down to read carefully, allowing students to see details and connections that are often missed in normal reading. Students will apply this methodology through guided study of the book of Ephesians, practicing careful observation of structure, argument flow, and key theological themes within the letter. Through guided practice, students develop confidence in handling biblical text for themselves, strengthening observation skills that support interpretation, teaching, and personal study. The course is highly practical and interactive, helping students engage Scripture with both analytical thinking and creativity. No prior language study is required.

Seeing the Scriptures Advanced (Romans) ( BLE-4-0060 )

This advanced seminar builds on foundational STS seminar's phrase diagramming skills by expanding visual analysis from the sentence level to deeper grammatical and structural observation. Students will continue diagramming sentences while adding two additional layers of complexity: identifying the mood of the Greek verb to differentiate between main verbs and participles to clarify clause structure, and diagramming at the level of syntax and discourse flow to recognize larger movements of thought. Students will apply this methodology through guided study of the book of Romans, observing how grammatical structure supports theological argument, doctrinal explanation, and pastoral application throughout the letter. The course strengthens students’ ability to observe complex passages while maintaining accessibility for those without extensive prior language training.
