COLLEGE OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS & LANGUAGES

BIBLICAL HEBREW LITERACY (APL 157)

Prerequisites:
Credits: 1 - 6

BIBLICAL HEBREW LITERACY is a tool in the process of acquiring the biblical language, in a playful and enjoyable manner. Within an innovative approach of "understanding first, reading and writing later" and natural learning, the course represents a significant leap in assisting students in the initial steps of this journey. By the end of the course, the student will be able to understand about 300 words of the biblical language, listen, read, and write small texts, as well as ask and answer simple questions. This school aims to prepare workers for the oral Bible translation movement. The course utilizes different techniques, including Total Physical Response (TPR), the Uniskript methodology (Hebrew), the natural methodology with input +1, faithful transcription to the phonology and intuitive spelling of Portuguese speakers. We understand that language acquisition is a process that encompasses the whole human being, and therefore, the school is designed to immerse the student in a safe, playful, and welcoming environment. Biblical Hebrew is a living language, and we believe that learning a language reveals new facets of God's character, as well as develops new aspects of each student's individuality in response to this exposure. We also understand the importance of pastoral support for students as they acquire the language. We recognize the apostolic aspect of the seminar, introducing students to the Bible translation movement.
