The Maternity Attendant/Kraamzorg acts as a companion to help the mother journey through difficult times in pregnancy and especially during her postpartum weeks. This is primarily within a non-medical perspective although the Maternity Attendant maintains skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, infant resuscitation and assessment for possible danger signs in pregnancy, the postnatal and neonatal periods. This is a strategic time in the life of the new mother and newborn infant, especially when they do not have appropriate supportive care from their traditional resources. This is not only a strategic in the physical lives of family-members but also an important spiritual time when parents' lives are being transformed! Maternity Attendants are able to assist women in their homes with light housekeeping, meal preparation, sharing important health information and physically monitoring mother and baby as they recover from birth and transform into a strong bonded family!
