This seminar is designed to examine the characteristics of water supplies available to communities, and to demonstrate how to provide, pump, store and purify water economically. Included are topics such as water management, water catchment, water holding and sanitation, water purification and non-electrical pumping systems. The seminar is mostly hands-on, and includes the construction of ferrocement water tanks (above ground and in ground), sand filters, washbasins and toilets, together with the construction of hand pumps and hydraulic pump systems. Questions of appropriate technology and community involvement in the solving of water problems are discussed in the classroom sessions.
